How to Take the Sting Out of Mondays

MondaysIt goes without saying that Monday’s stink/suck/chafe.  You come off of a lovely (holiday) weekend only to go back to the breakneck speed of the week.

The schedule is busy.

There’s a ton of email.

Everyone seems grumpy.

How could you NOT be in a bad mood?

But what if you could do a few things to help take the ick out of Monday?

Three Silly Reasons for Gratitude

3 silly thingsWelcome to the holiday season.  If you are in the U.S., I hope you had a nice Thanksgiving that was more restful than hectic.  If you took part in the Black Friday festivities, you are (1) brave, (2) a person who loves a challenge and (3) a bit wacky.

Even though Thanksgiving is behind us, it’s never too late to be thankful and engage your gratitude energy. Gratitude can come not only from big, deep items but from the smallest things that make you smile.  Being able to tap into your gratitude energy means taking charge of your thoughts (even when they get ugly).  There’s no easier way to short-circuit negative thinking than a good dose of gratitude.

Be Successful While You Sleep

bedColor me silly, but I’m a big advocate of sleep.  Yes, it takes a lot of time and eats away at the hours we could be watching The Housewives of Wherever or HGTV.  But I’m a barefaced bitch if I’m consistently shy of my needed shut eye. A girl’s gotta sleep.

Much like George Costanza, I’d happily sleep under my desk if I could figure out the mechanics to fit under there.  (Let’s see: There’s my height. Then the length and width of the desk. Gotta tape measure handy??)

We are one sleep-deprived species.

It has become a badge of honor to work to the point of exhaustion.  Not because you’re plowing the fields, raising a barn or crossing the continent in a Conestoga wagon.  You’re working lots of hours in an office.  You’re running kids around.  Your schedule has no white space.

The busier we are the more we feel we’re achieving what we should in life.

The Meditation Situation

Willie editWhen I tell people that I meditate I often get a couple of questions:

  • How do you do it?
  • Isn’t it hard to think about nothing?

With that in mind, I’d like to introduce my meditation assistant, Willie.

Willie is a 16 pound cat who loves nothing more than to sit on one’s lap and purr.  Since I sit in a chair when I meditate, Willie believes this is an open invitation to join me.

His purring does create a certain meditative mood and makes me feel cozy.

How does one meditate?

The Calming Effect of a Ritual

oatmealDon’t you hate mornings?  First you have to actually get out of bed which is a hassle because you’re warm, comfortable and relaxed.  Why would you knowingly leave that behind to shower, fix your hair, put gunk on your eyelashes and dress in clothing that isn’t yoga pants?

Is there anything that can take the sting out of mornings, especially those mornings when you need to work?

(I know some of you work from home and get ready without the hair and eyelash prep.  And, yes, you get to wear yoga pants.  Kudos to you!  But you probably have to face the world, albeit virtually, so there’s the getting out of bed part.)

Every morning I put myself through a ritual that calms my mind as I prepare to venture out into the world.  It involves oatmeal, a pot and about 5 minutes.
